There is a hold on future installs, until a fix can be found. [ Edited Sun Feb 14 2010, 01:42PM ]

To check clouds above that you have to go into the ASOS system(4,5,9 and 8 three times) to see where the "hits" are. Check this out.... It appears that under low visibility (i.e. 1/2 mile or less), and surface based obscuration conditions, the vertical visibility (VV) reported in the METAR is approximately 500 feet too high when compared to a human observer. Because of this, a management decision was made at NWS to suspend further installation of the CL31 and turn ceilometer report processing off at CL31 sites in these conditions until further information can be analyzed to make a more informed decision. The NWS is asking that for the time being Contract Weather Observers at Service Level A and B sites take charge of the sky condition report when visibility drops to 1/2 mile. We are also asking that this be done at Service Level C sites when Limited Aviation Weather Reporting Station (LAWRS)controllers are on duty... This was from the FAA. Apparently there will not be anymore CL31's being deployed anytime soon.
